In 1960s Jeju, a young girl named Oh Ae-soon believes nothing is more wonderful than writing poetry, while Yang Gwan-shik, a quiet boy, watches over her from afar as they grow up together. Even as she faces poverty, a patriarchal society, and the limitations placed on her for being a woman, Ae-soon refuses to be discouraged and continues to write in her own voice. Gwan-shik, steadfast and reserved, loves Ae-soon deeply but silently, showing unwavering devotion throughout her life. Together, they endure Ae-soon’s marriage, divorce, the loss of a child, and her journey to become a poet. Now, with faces that seem to have let go of everything, they look at each other and say, “Still, we made it this far—so we’ve been completely fooled by life.”
